Emergency exit

Noemi Stockmann, born in 1980 in Freckenhorst (West), the Design College in Münster.

The artist¡¯s contribution to the contest deals with what happened on August 13th, 1961 (closing of the border and beginning of Wall construction). The borders have been closed so rapidly that people did not have any time to escape. The symbol of the emergency exit, normally positively connoted, is modified in its visual expression and by this means symbolizes that on the one hand for the East German people there was no emergency exit any more and on the other hand also shall allude to the many small loopholes or tunnels by which some people nevertheless successfully escaped.
