이 작품은 1961년 8월 13일에 어떤 일이 일어났는지를 다루고 있다. (국경폐쇄와 장벽건설시작) 장벽은 너무나 급격하게 폐쇄되어 사람들은 미처 도망갈 시간조차 없었다. 보통 긍정적인 것을 나타내는 비상구는 이 포스터에서 동독 사람들에게 더 이상 비상구가 없었음을 나타냄과 동시에 한편으로는 탈출에 성공한 사람들의 많은 구멍이나 터널을 나타내기도 한다.

| The artist’s contribution to the contest deals with what happened on August 13th, 1961 (closing of the border and beginning of Wall construction). The borders have been closed so rapidly that people did not have any time to escape. The symbol of the emergency exit, normally positively connoted, is modified in its visual expression and by this means symbolizes that on the one hand for the East German people there was no emergency exit any more and on the other hand also shall allude to the many small loopholes or tunnels by which some people nevertheless successfully escaped. |
